Patterns, Rhymes and Creative Play: Term 4 in Zebra and Tiger Group

Zebra and Tiger Group at Cashmore Early Years Centre have had a fantastic Term 4, with patterns and rhyme taking centre stage in some really creative and playful ways!

The children have been exploring patterns across lots of different activities, from peg boards, threading and cubes to drawings and clever sticks. They have been thinking about patterns involving colour, size and shape, as well as copying action patterns like stomp, clap, stomp, clap — which has been brilliantly noisy fun! Some children have even pushed their learning further by creating ABCABC patterns, which is a fantastic achievement at this age.

Rhyme has been just as exciting, with the children listening carefully to words and talking about what sounds the same and what sounds different. They have enjoyed two wonderful books, Greedy Goose for Chocolate Mousse and Hippo Has a Hat, spotting rhymes like “skirt and shirt” and “seal and meal” as they go. Rhyming resources have been a big hit too, with children matching objects that rhyme together such as shell and bell, cat and rat, and dog and frog. And perhaps most enjoyably of all, the children have been singing favourite songs with the words swapped out for rhyming alternatives — Twinkle Twinkle Chocolate Bar and Hickory Dickory Sock have been causing a lot of laughter!

All of this playful exploration of pattern and rhyme lays a brilliant foundation for early mathematics and literacy, and the children have been absolutely loving every minute of it.
